Effective with cases diagnosed 1/1/2024 and forward.

The Pediatric Manual will be the primary source of information for coding Pediatric data items, which includes Stage Related Data Items (Pediatric Primary Tumor, Pediatric Regional Nodes, and Pediatric Mets) and Site-Specific Data Items (SSDIs). This manual is being released for the first time for 2024 cases and will cover instructions for coding data items that can be found in the Toronto Childhood Cancer Stage Guidelines, Version 2, (released May 2022), which is a pediatric staging system developed by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and other partners that is used internationally. In addition, the US has added some additional data items that were determined to be clinically significant for pediatric tumors.

The manual will be expanded over the course of several years and will be a comprehensive guide for coding all pediatric cancers.

The 2024 manual is divided into several sections.

1. Cancer Specific Guidelines

a. When completed, this section will include the bulk of the Pediatric Manual. This will be a “one stop shop” for all information regarding pediatric tumors.

b. This section is currently under development. It is estimated to take 2-3 years to complete this section.

2. Appendix I Pediatric.Manual.Appendix.I.pdf

a. Pediatric Data Collection System

i. This data collection system is based on the EOD Data Collection System which has been in use by SEER for over 50 years and includes the three building blocks for collecting stage: Pediatric Primary Tumor, Pediatric Regional Nodes and Pediatric Mets.

ii. Other data items include the Pediatric ID (schema definitions based on primary site and histology), version numbers and derived values (when applicable)

b. Prognostic Factors (Site-Specific Data Items)

i. Site-Specific Data Items will also be included for some of the schemas

Note: These data items have not yet been approved for inclusion in the NAACCR Data Standards. These data items have a NAACCR item # such as 96NN, which are temporary numbers. The associated NAACCR Data Item Name and XML NAACCR ID are provisional.

3. Appendix II Pediatric.Manual.Appendix.II.pdf

a. Appendix 2, presented in Pediatric ID order, provides detailed information on the sites and histologies and behavior codes included in each schema, along with the applicable Pediatric Data Items and the SSDIs. This information is used in registry software development and may also be useful to researchers and others interested in understanding schema definitions.

4. Appendix III Pediatric.Manual.Appendix.III.pdf

a. Appendix 3 is a Microsoft Word document which lists all the SSDIs in numerical order, the applicable Pediatric Schema ID(s), and the start and end year.
